Mucky Maidstone Drowning Under a Sea of Litter

April 1, 2014 10:15 AM

LitterMaidstone Lib Dems are appalled at the marked deterioration in the cleanliness of our streets, verges and green spaces.

Raised planters, shrub beds and roadsides are especially litter-strewn (see picture of litter-strewn squalour taken in central Maidstone).

Maidstone Council's Shadow Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr. Martin Cox (Lib Dem) is saddened that Maidstone has lost its hard-won reputation for cleanliness and tough zero tolerance enforcement against litter and fly-tipping. "If we regain a position of leadership at Maidstone Council we pledge to re-introduce tough intelligence-led enforcement." Martin states. He continues: "The throwing of litter from vehicles is an especial problem. Whereas in the past Maidstone Council took a hard line, this now goes unpunished."

High Street Ward Councillor Clive English (Lib Dem) adds: "We also plan to expand our regular 'clean-sweep' community clean-ups beyond Lib Dem strongholds such as High Street, North and East Wards and into all parts of the Borough."

Maidstone Council's Lib Dem Group Deputy Leader Tony Harwood, who once chaired a county-wide task force on fly-tipping (appointed by then Leader of KCC Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart), is determined that our rural areas are cleaned-up too. He states: "Local country lanes, field entrances and woodland continue to be disfigured by litter and fly-tipping. I'm determined that covert cameras and other appropriate enforcement measures are re-instated, and that the despoilers of our countryside understand that we will catch and prosecute them."
