Cllr. Fran Wilson Demands Urgent Action to Halt High Street Ward Decline

January 8, 2015 8:00 PM

High Street Ward EnvironmentMaidstone Council Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Fran Wilson has expressed despair at the rapidly declining environmental quality across her High Street Ward. The photographs featured show just one small area of her ward, namely Blythe Road, Sunningdale Court and Square Hill Road, where litter and damaged street furniture is disfiguring a very pleasant residential neighbourhood.

Fran is concerned that residents are losing faith in Maidstone Council's ability to maintain clean and pleasant streets. Local Liberal Democrats believe that the Conservative Council's changes and reductions in street sweeping frequencies and new reporting procedures are behind the marked decline in local environmental quality.

Local residents and Lib Dem Councillors are increasingly taking direct action and cleaning-up the mess themselves. Local Lib Dem Councillor Tony Harwood, for example, is clearing at least two black sacks full of beer cans, injecting detritus and other squalid litter from the adjacent banks of the River Len every single weekend!

Fran commented: "litter and fly tipping isn't just ugly, it presents a big danger for children, pets and wildlife." She continued: "Maidstone Council must return to the tough intelligence-led enforcement which won Maidstone Council under Lib Dem leadership a national reputation and made Maidstone a by-word for clean streets and countryside."
